Detroit’s Highest Rooftop and Extended Stay Hotel Brings New Life To Old Metropolitan Building

2019/05/16 By The Editor Leave a Comment

Detroit Rock City has no intention of slowing its roll with the influx of bars and restaurants coming to the city this year. As another addition to the lineup of rooftop bars already in the city, Monarch Club sits 14-stories high on top of the Metropolitan Building – making it the tallest rooftop bar in Detroit.

In the past year, the 93-year-old Metropolitan Building has gone under a $34 million-dollar redevelopment after being vacant for almost 4 decades. The penthouse floor, now housing the Monarch Club, presents 3 open terraces with different orientations of the city and fireplaces, several lounge rooms, and an indoor bar.

The newly restored castle and 20’s social club inspired rooftop bar serves artisan cocktails with a menu of small plates brought to the public by Hell’s Kitchen competitor Chef Jared Bobkin. Also on the daily operational team are members from well-known Detroit establishments such as Grey Ghost and Roast.

Though the location serves up small eats, their focus is still primarily set on the bar’s classic drink list. With options like burnt end poutine and BBQ Brisket Sliders complementing well known drinks such as Old Fashions, Gin Martinis, and French 75s, the establishment hopes to stay true to the 20’s storied city clubs that used to litter the city of Detroit.

The Monarch Club is currently open 7 nights a week from 4 PM until midnight and has available seating up to 150 (80 indoors, 70 indoors).

Joining the Monarch Bar at 33 John R Street is another Detroit first. Extended stay hotel, the Element Hotel, can be found directly below the establishment with approximately 110 rooms for short and long stays.

Equipped with a small kitchen, laundry capabilities, and oversized closet space, the new hotel allures patrons looking at a comfortable space during extended visits. In addition to their homey guest rooms, the Element Hotel has plans for a shared space in a cluster of rooms that promotes communal interaction. Hoping to be an open place where people gather to cook or work, every 4 rooms will have one designated area to share.

Six Bars In Detroit You May Not Know About

2019/02/19 By Victoria Tsai Leave a Comment

The Coming – ? (Corktown)

Dave Kwiatkowski of Detroit Optimist Society, parent company of Sugar House, Wright & Co., Bad Luck Bar, and The Peterboro, is setting plans in motion to bring a Korean flair to downtown Detroit this coming March. The soon to be upscale watering hole is planning to seat about 50 on the first floor and will offer staple Korean small dishes alongside raw clams and oysters. Adding a little exclusivity, the second floor is set which feature a chef’s choice sushi counter that only serves 16. Though the concept has yet to be named, the location is set to open in early 2020.

The Old – The Whisky Parlor (Campus Martius)

Hidden away in the heart of the city, on the second floor of a historic building built in 1879, houses an intimate location for dark liquor aficionados. If the name of the bar wasn’t already a dead giveaway, this small location offers an enormous selection of whiskey; bourbon, scotch, and rye with the addition of international flavors as well.

If whiskey neat or on the rocks isn’t your calling, the location also offers a menu of spirits, wine, beers & ciders, as well as a small menu of parlor cocktails.

The New – Cøllect (Eastern Market)

A new addition to the newly established restaurant, Gather has cleared out their original Airbnb space and turned it into a new bar. Staying true to the theme on the lower level, the new bar carries over Scandinavian culture seen downstairs. The unique lettering in the new name makes up the word “øl” meaning the Danish word for “beer”, which conveniently, is exactly what the location serves up. Cøllect serves up a variation of beers spanning throughout 14 taps, consisting of a variety of beers from smaller breweries, ciders, and even kombucha.

The Revamped – Craft Work (West Village)

Once a veteran for Sunday brunch, the resturaunt has now switched up their long-standing craft and have ended their traditional breakfast menu. After their introduction of a raw bar, the restaurant also now serves as a go to location to grab drinks. The new American restaurant, closely mimicking a library, also creates specialty cocktails alongside unique wine pairings to accentuate their raw oysters and savory menu.

The Tropics – Lost River (Morningside)

For those who can’t just hop on a 7+ hour flight to Tahiti or anywhere tropical for that matter, has an option to escape to Detroit’s newest tiki bar. With a true island vibe, the bar serves classic tiki drinks such as the Mai Tai and Singapore Sling in ridiculously adorable ceramic cups (which are available for purchase) commissioned from Hamtramck Ceramck.

Lost River’s menu also consists of unique drinks such as the Dead Man’s Hand, the Zombie, or house punch to share. If tropical drinks aren’t exactly your cup of tea, the temporary warm weathered oasis also offers classics with an added island twist to each. Don’t worry, you’ll still get your fun with ceramics, especially when ordering the Wee Bathtub Gin.

The Hidden – The Keep (Cadillac Square)

If you were ever wondering what it was like to be a tippler during the time of prohibition, this place has it down to pat.  Not exactly in line with what traditional speakeasys are known to be, this distinguishable triangular location now has an outdoor patio in the busiest part of downtown Detroit. The basement bar, the original location of Tokyo Club, is now the place to find a selection of specialty cocktails and an exceptional vibe. If you’re in the city between the hours of 4 PM to 7 PM, be sure to check out their happy hour menu with $5-$6 options.
