Originally planned as The Ashton Detroit, an 11-story building consisting of 83 luxury floor to ceiling condos in 2016, now has transformed from a $54 million project to a $47 million hotel. Understanding the needs of the market and the difficultly of condo financing, Means Group has sold the 30% of planned reservations and are fully moving towards the new direction.
Now known as The Ashton at the Cambria, the hotel will contain 154 rooms to fit in a 150,000 square foot parking lot located next to the existing Walker-Roehirg Building. Teaming up with Choice Hotels Internationals and Koucar Management, The Cambria Hotel hopes to attract business travelers visiting the connected Walker-Roehirg Building, which is set for redevelopment into new retail and office space.
In addition to the new rooms at $180 a night, Cambria Hotel has plans to follow in suit of the growing list of hotels such as the Shinola Hotel and The Element that have added extra luxury amenities to their locations. Besides from a rooftop pool and spa, the new hotel plans to bring a new restaurant and rooftop bar to Detroit with the aid of celebrity chef Fabio Viviani who is known for his appearance on Top Chef and restaurant, Mercato.
Groundbreaking for the hotel is set for June 2019 with expectations to complete the project before the North American International Auto Show in 2020. Thought this is the first location for Cambria Hotel in Detroit, the Choice Hotel International group is already an established brand in the hotel sector, with almost 50 other locations in major cities such as Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and Nashville.
