Global rap superstar Big Sean, born Sean Anderson, has teamed up with Troy’s Emagine Entertainment to bring a 10 to 12 screen, 1300 seat movie complex to Detroit’s Greater Downtown area. Locations are still being scouted but Milwaukee Junction, Midtown, and East Jefferson Avenue are areas with potential for such a space-consuming project. Emagine co-founder Paul Glantz said he hopes to have the property search completed within six months and then begin the planning and development stages. As of 2018, Emagine has eight locations in southeastern Michigan, eight in Minnesota, and another site in Illinois.
“The Sean Anderson Theatre, powered by Emagine” has a planned completion date in 2020 and began when a member of the rapper’s team reached out to Emagine. Currently the city only has four theatres showing films; The Redford Theater and The Senate Theater show older films, Cinema Detroit in Midtown shows indie and foreign films, while BelAir Luxury Cinema on 8 Mile is the only multiplex within city limits. A large multiplex in the city center has been an expressed desire of Detroiters for a long time and Emagine is dedicated to providing a luxury venue to fill this need.
