It’s the Black Tap of Michigan, the closest Venezuelan hot spot in short of traveling to South America yourself. This place of wonder is no other than Garrido’s Bistro and Pastry. Sound familiar? Just this past year, Garrido’s was featured on Ginormous Foods for their 18 LB arepa also known as “The Punisher”. The result? Well, you’ll just have to tune in to see the aftermath.
Working as a husband and wife team, ever since meeting in engineering school in Venezuela, chef Vanessa Gonzalez and Christopher Garrido also come from an extensive background in the culinary arts. Christopher’s parents, who founded High Training Educational Institute over 2 decades ago in Venezuela, were also renowned chefs themselves. The couple then, both being involved in HTEI, opened up their first location in Jesuit Campus with an Ala Carte, buffet, and fast food menu for the students attending the school.
The duo since then have brought their style of cooking to US soil, graciously gifting the community with a little taste of home cooking with their second location. After falling in love with Grosse Pointe, the Garridos opened their culinary doors in April of 2015. Ever since then, the twosome have been filling their restaurant with hearty flavorful dishes ranging from seafood pasta to our favorite dish, lomo saltado.
What is lomo saltado you ask? This dish, translating simply to “stir-fried” or “sautéed loin”, covers a bed of rice with 8 ounces of tenderloin steak strips, tomatoes, onions, topped with a Peruvian pan sauce and freshly grown in house herbs. To only say that this dish was hearty may be creating a bit of wrongdoing. Not only did this dish warm us up from the first spoonful but also satisfied all of our taste buds with the tang of tomatoes in combination of the subtlety sweet, flavorful mix of sauces. Though this dish itself may not be Halal, Garrido’s offer options on their menu for diners who have these dietary restrictions and offer replacement options for those who ask.
Besides their famous 18 lb arepa, Garrido’s is also well known for one other item on their menu. Hot. Chocolate. Decked out with various toppings from mini ice cream bars to a full-fledged donut, this hybrid of desserts is guaranteed to send your sweet tooth to the moon and back. Don’t believe us? Check out the photos of the ones we got to try! Did we also mention they have a frozen version as well?
If you’re not all about hot chocolate like we are- no worries! Garrido’s Bistro and Pastry also offers quesillo (Venezuelan caramel flan), delectable churros covered in cinnamon sugar with a Nutella and/or Dulce de Leche dip, deep fried cheesecake with an assortment of berries, and of course the molten lava cake topped with ice cream encased in a Belgian chocolate shell. We know what you’re thinking- if it’s anytime between 12-9 PM, grab your car keys and head out your door. We’ll even do you the favor of including their address below. Make sure to let them know that Think313 sent you.
